STM – Project

A scanning tunneling microscope, or STM for short, is a device that exploits quantum tunneling current to resolve the structure of metals with atomic-level accuracy.

LT, an electrical engineering student at ETH and good friend, and I are currently working on building a STM ourselves.

We’re still working on the microscope, so there are no exciting measurements just yet. Still there are a few pictures of us working on the setup. Note that all the PCBs and the aluminium scanhead are custom and designed by us.

Here’s a video of LT soldering a very small 1nF capacitor. Sorry for the video quality….I had to zoom in quiet a bit.

We’ll post the link to the GitHub and more technical documents, once we’ve got some results.
